A Plymouth man has been charged with theft after a witness saw someone climb over gates with bolt croppers and return with an engine.
A passerby called 999 on Sunday after seeing what they suspected was a theft in progress.
A police spokesman said: "On Sunday evening an eagle eyed person called 999 to report seeing someone climbing over some gates at The Moorings, Embankment Road, Kingsbridge, carrying a pair of bolt croppers.
"They also saw them return with a boat engine and then drive off.
"The witness was able to stay on the phone and provide the registration number of the vehicle and the direction it drove off.
"Police Officers from across the South Hams were dispatched and the vehicle was stopped on the A379."
29 year old Stuart Ball from Plymouth has been charged with theft and bailed to appear at Magistrates Court.
